My favourite bookshop in Adelaide, Dymocks in Rundle Mall, is owned by two of the nicest people you could ever meet: Bruce and Mandy Macky.
What Bruce doesn’t know about books, and crime thrillers in particular, is stuff not worth knowing.
So I was especially delighted to read that they have AGAIN been voted Australian Bookshop of the Year by the Australian Publishers Association.
This is the second time they’ve won the national gong, and the fourth time they’ve won the South Australian gong.
What stuns and delights me is that a few years ago ‘Borders’ came into town with a big splash. I first came across Borders while holidaying in San Francisco and was blown away by a bookshop that had a coffee shop, snack bar, allowed you to pick a book up off the shelf and read it over a coffee and then put it back on the shelf if you didn’t want to buy it. Totally radical as far as my experience of bookshops goes.
So when two friends of mine continue to win prestigous industry awards for a bookshop that is sans coffee shop and comfy lounge chairs I am especially delighted.
It just goes to show that the quality of the staff, and the range of books offered, will often times defeat flashy storefronts.
