G'day! Thanks for returning!
The Victorian Chapter of the IABC here in Australia has announced its inaugural conference — 7 & 8 November — and has put together a splendid selection of speakers and topics.
But, perhaps as a reflection of Australia’s penchant to mimic overseas trends three years later, there is nothing on the agenda about social media.
I see no Trevor Cook or, humbly, myself being invited to warn fellow business communicators that these new communication channels offer real threats and golden opportunities.
Perhaps Warren Bickford will be able to suggest that this is an area that needs inclusion, even as a workshop, in the next conference.
I won’t be attending the inaugural conference but look forward to hopefully catching up with Warren when he visits some long-lost friends here in Adelaide. I’ll introduce you to some of our fine Coopers Ale, chap!

Another indicator, Lee, of the major work still ahead to help our communication colleagues understand that social media is no longer something new or on the distant horizon but here and now.
There is some very good news, though, in other IABC conference happenings – the European IABC conference taking place in Paris on December 1-2 includes a panel discussion about social media as the conference’s plenary opening session. I’m moderating that panel.
So if you can make it over here, you won’t be disappointed! Info:

Typical IABC. I have to go to the comments of a blog of an Australian IABC member to find out what’s happening in my own region.
I’ve been a member of IABC since the late 80s… the ONLY period in which I received any sort of mail from IABC Europe was when I was on IABC’s board.
Lee, Neville… keep posting IABC Europe news on your blogs… otherwise, I (and I don’t think I’m alone) will never know anything.
