Technology can fail – make sure you don’t

This author’s favourite Chicagoan, Heidi Miller, has commented about a recent event where technology failed her.

In her post she recommends you check and recheck everything technical, right up to the point of delivery.
But if it the tech fails, make sure you have your presentation in a state that is deliverable without the tech.

In other words, remember that technology is a medium, not the message. It is just a tool to support you, but your presentation must be memorable for what you deliver, not what the whizz-bang stuff does.

Oh, come on, admit it: I’m the ONLY Chicagoan you know! :-)

And actually, having technical difficulties for the podcast marketing seminar really reinforced the main message of my talk: have something to say. People will listen to you even if your audio isn’t the absolute best if you are passionate about your subject matter.

Fortunately, the tech did end up working for the most part, so I didn’t have to give a live demonstration of that philosophy!

    DAMN – the secret’s out! :-)

Hey, loved that bit in your FIR comment about being stalked by yourself — brilliant!

This is another good reason for having good handouts at the presentation. It’s a backup if the tech fails and it lets you put more detail and analysis on paper and keep the visuals simple (Zen) and the focus on you, rather than your chartjunk.

Excellent comment, Stuart! Death-by-graph is an all too common phenomenon.
