Astroturfing and the eighth circle of Hell

I am against AstroturfingThose fine Aussie PR chaps Trevor Cook and Paull Young contacted a swag of us on the weekend, alerting us to a new movement, the Anti-Astroturfing initiative.

Due to the vagaries of servers and permissions and stuff (which is still being looked into) I have been unable to put my own statement of membership (although I was pleased to see I was the first of our community after Trevor and Paull to put my name down in the list of bloggers who have signed up).

My arch rival and nemesis, the Boy Jenkins, has posted about the initiative with such deft humour that I can only doff my schoolboy cap in respect.

As Jenkins says,

Astroturfers may not know this, yet, but they’ve been reserved a circle of hell just outside that of spammers.

For me, that puts Astroturfers in the eighth circle, as spammers have the seventh circle reserved, and the ninth is reserved for paedophiles (with an extra deep circle under that for church-based paedophiles), serial rapists, serial murderers, corrupt dictators, and so on.

Congratulations on being the first on board Lee!

24 hours into the campaign and the entire Aussie PR blogosphere had signed up… all four of us.

I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts on the subject.
