Is Australia still not yet smoking the social media dope?

AC/DC

It would appear not.

Paull Young notes that Duncan Riley attended the recent ‘Media Connect Influence Conference’ and was tempted to throw his hands in the air:

They don’t get being part of the conversation. They’re still working from a mindset of one to many.

As Paull noted about a recent seminar Ross Monaghan and I were guest panelists at, whilst most business people have thankfully got past the “what’s a blog?” stage, they are still a long way to go before Web2.0 hits the mainstream.

Thankfully a client of mine who cannot yet be named has managed to secure some internal podcasting work for a major and influential government department. If the result we will be creating together for that department ‘works’ as we believe it will, it will be yet another nail in the coffin for those communicators and managers who believe that the ‘message’ and the ‘conversation’ can be controlled. It never has been able to be controlled, guys… wake up!

Nail by nail, inch by inch, one clueless obstacle after another falls… but as AC/DC once noted, it’s a long way to the shop if you want a sausage roll.

    Love the Acca Dacca allusion.

It’s going to be a long process to get our compatriots up to speed – but I must say it’s fun educating people (well, at least those who are willing to learn…)

We’ve just got to keep pushing along. As a matter of fact just last night I recorded a podcast interview for G’day World with Cameron Reilly where we went over all this stuff in-depth once more.

That shop’s a long, long way away – but the Sausage Rolls will be tops once we get there ;-) .

    Hi Lee,

I’m about to pitch a state government dept. in NSW. If that doesn’t conflict with what you and your client are doing, would you be willing to let me pick your brains on how you found the process. Obviously if it’s federal or you and your client are doing or aiming to do work in NSW in the near future, I see this wouldn’t work. But exchanging ideas, feedback, overcoming objections and so on with Australian govt departments could be mutually beneficial if we’re not competing.

I’m coming at this question with the philosophy that there’s few of us doing this work in Australia at the moment, it’s a continent-sized country with enormous potential for there to be an excess of work for us; and the more we work together to build the market, the better we do. The sort of thing C.C. Chapman’s been taling about.

    I hope that’s not out-of-line.

    Hi Steven.

    Bugger off.

Actually, only joking. Give me a call and we can discuss options — there may well be no conflict of interest, but obviously I need to confirm what sort of market you are targetting first (after all, it was my client who did all the running and secured the work – I’m just actually ‘doing’ it).

I’m hoping to see you in SL tonight (8 p.m. NSW time, right?). Perhaps we’ll get a chance to speak then. If not then I’ll definitely call you. Happy to tell you what I’m planning; I don’t want to waste time competing with your client when there’s so much co-operating to be done :)

    See you in world.

After viewing the video Epic 2014 and reading up on Web2.0, I agree that Australia is going to be left in the dust if they don’t hop on board. The one to many mindset is not going to cut it anymore. As a student majoring in PR, I am made more and more aware everyday about the changing face of public relations and the impact that social media is going to have in the very near future. Even though many businesses are past the point of “What is a blog?”, I agree that there is a long way to go until we reach the point of complete understanding and acceptance of the social media future.

The Epic video is a stunner, hey Stephanie?! Every audience that I have shown it to has had their heads explode (and I know that my co-owner of the Better Desirable Roasted Communication Cafe franchise Allan Jenkins has found the same thing).

What IS encouraging is that even in backward lil’ ol’ Australia there ARE companies who are willing to test-smoke the Web2.0 dope. Even inhale.

I know that I have a few clients who have gone down this route (and I’m itching to announce another, but I’m waiting on their main website to be updated to announce it) and I know that Steve over at http://www.breakawaycontent.com/blog has picked up a client or two here. I believe that Trevor Cook (http://trevorcook.typepad.com/weblog/) is also getting more and more enquiries.

There are probably four main PR social media reps in Australia: myself, Steve, Trevor Cook and Paull Young (who is about to embark on a global tour, but you probably know him via the Forward blog).

There are others, most notably marketers (but not PR folks – their focus is very different) who are also successful in their own right.

So perhaps it IS picking up here, but as Duncan Riley notes (and he is one of the most successful marketers here), there is still a LOOONNNNGGG way to go.

But as Yazz once sang in the 1980s, “the only way is up”
