Second Life meetup highlights traditional PR issue – alcoholism

G'day! Thanks for returning!

Me in my best togs

The recent Second Life meet up organised by Kami Huyse was well attended, I thought, particularly by those who aren’t the ‘usual suspects’.

Featuring long-time PR Second Lifer, Jeremy Pepper, the meeting also attracted the interest of a non-PR journalist, Miller Copeland, who promises to follow the exploits of this rag-tag mob, and also Eric Rice himself.

I had meant to skype Eric later in the day (the meetup was at the crack of dawn for me) but other issues got in the way and I have yet to talk with him about how he sees the ‘traditional’ business fitting into the Second Life universe.

Kami at the bottle - AGAIN!But lest you fall asleep thinking that it was all ‘business, business, business’, let me assure you that some traditional PR activities occurred.

Here’s a picture of Kami engaging in that most noble of PR activities — drinking. We do worry about the girl…

And Kami has loaded a 12-page transcript (pdf) if you are so inclined… but read her post first.

I look forward to the next ‘meet up’ — and let us not forget the ‘Infinite Mind’ in-world meet up of the Second Life Business Communicators (another group) later today (unfortunately I won’t be able to attend).

Nice Lee; By the way, the little tic my avatar developed was brought on by the fake Tecate beer I picked up in the American Apparel store. It is now fixed. My suggestion, if you visit the American Apparel (AA) store in Second Life, don’t pick up the beer. Just think AA=Acoholics Anonyous and don’t do it.

Which brings me to my second point, can avatars pick up virusus or tics, programmed by Second Life citizens, that render them useless? It seems like yet another security issue to worry about. Ah well.

Thanks again for hosting.

Lee, sounds like you had a great in-world meetup – and thanks for the pointer to Kami’s posting of the transcript. Interesting questions about PR in Second Life posed.

To add a comment to the meetup – Second Life shows us we need to be thinking about “media” very differently than we traditionally do/have. I don’t think the trick is to be focused on “how do we translate traditional PR to virtual worlds” but rather on how are virtual worlds changing media and how do we respond to (or lead with) 3-D and immersive media.

Sorry you can’t be at tomorrow’s Business Communicators of Second Life meeting. And, I hope your offer of hosting a BCSL meeting is still open.

Kami — your secret drinking habit is out in the open now, sorry!! {tee hee}

Linda — any time, please feel free to utilise the CommsCafe even if I’m not there. And as a hint for future expansion, the Comms Cafe will be taking a leaf out of C.C. Chapman’s book and building a more ‘cafe-like’ and larger space to house bigger events and provide refreshments and entertainment. Keep watching that space!
