Lee,

I am trying to contact you, but I live in Madrid, so not only would calling you cost a small fortune, the line quality would be awful.

Do you have any IM details I can contact you at?

Ike - why not just post about it yourself and I'll link to it? I really am serious about shutting down my email, to which an in-progress post will shortly attest...

Of course, if you prefer not to post it on your site, I'm happy to post it on mine, with full attribution. You can still email Lee@LeeHopkins.net for a while yet...

Lee - I'll be happy to write some stuff down, but it's really not a one-size-fits-all solution.

I spent an hour on the phone with Heidi because I needed to know more about how she wanted to use e-mail: what machine(s), what synchronization, what frequency, need for accounts, automated backup, filtering, and the like.

It's not easy.

Shoot me an e-mail at the address I listed, as I don't have Skype. E-mail is still cheaper than calling halfway around the world!

Heidi: time for you to share Ike's tips, then, or for Ike to post about it!

Lee, this is very timely! I just spent an hour on Skype yesterday with Ike Pigott, who gave me tips on how to deal with piles and piles of email, very little of which is from actual customers. I think I'll spend the weekend implementing, but hopefully it will help!

Lee, I like this description of the Six Stages of Email. As a highly evolved gentleman, it looks like you have progressed to the Sixth Stage: Death!

I use email for data transfer but try to avoid it as much as possible for communication or planning because it’s so inefficient and ineffective. I also try to only ‘do email’ in several blocks through the day then minimise Outlook and get on with my actual job. I’m lucky that Santos has rockin’ spam filters as I only get one or two spams a day.

Lee, I do find email useful for much of the routine work I do with clients -- sending files back and forth, drawing up schedules for projects, even invoicing ;-)).

Like you, however, I find that email is NOT the right tool when you're in a hurry or need to decide something that would otherwise require six messages back and forth. Just today someone sent me an email at 4:55 p.m., noting that he needed a reply by 5. HUH? Am I supposed to sit here all day and just watch emails stream in? CALL ME. I do answer my phone. Sheesh.
