Death to email, part two

G'day! Thanks for returning!

In an earlier rant I proclaimed my desire to free myself from the clutches of my spammed-out inboxes, warning that at some stage in the future I would start culling and slashing and burning.

The culling and slashing and burning phase has commenced.

To wit: yesterday I noticed that I was yet again having problems with my LeeHopkins.com domain email addresses, in particular Lee at LeeHopkins.com.

Rather than spend countless hours trying to get it working again, I figured it far more productive to just ignore it and focus on something else.

So for all intents and purposes, the email address no longer exists. One of the two main email addresses I use and one of the two main email addresses that are plagued with spam will burden my inbox no more.

If you email me at my Lee at LeeHopkins.net (yes, it’s still working!) address you will receive an autoresponse stating:

Thanks for emailing me.

I am in the process of slowly shutting down my email accounts.

Why?

Read my post at http://snipurl.com/1nxda for clues. I would much rather you ring me and talk than rely on email.

My office number is +61 8 8121 4444 [or 08 8121 4444 within Australia]. My mobile no. is +61 410 642 052 [or 0410 642 052 within Australia].

In the meantime, if you can delete the email account ‘Lee@LeeHopkins.com’ from your address books … see? I’ve already started.

For my clients with whom I have ongoing, long-standing projects I will set up specific email addresses for each of you; for the rest I will set up project-specific email addresses.

The overall idea? CALL ME! Talk to me! Let me hear the warmth of your sweet dulcet voice!

Thanks again for your understanding.

Lee

So it has started – the slow but purposeful silencing with extreme prejudice of my email, along with the rationalisation of my social media time expenditure.

As a consultant I need to keep up with the latest tools and sites and I will continue to do so, but as a communicator I will limit my serious time investments to the following:

One of the key questions any sane person might ask is “Are you moving away from email completely?”, to which the answer is ‘No’.

That would be foolish and inconvenient for many of my clients. But what I am doing is limiting my exposure to spammers.

One generic gmail account for website signups (e.g. when a site wants you to register with an email address), one for each client, one extremely personal one.

So for now you can still use Lee@LeeHopkins.net.

Let the fun begin!

Hi Lee, I hope your new email strategy is working for you. Since learning about the joys of instant messaging, wikis, social networks etc. I use email less and less these days - though this sometimes involves informing new contacts and clients on alternative ways of communicating.

We're at opposite ends of the world's time zones, so a 'live' conversation will be a rare thing, but it's good to be connected in other ways. Hoping your back is healing rapidly. :)
