Is there such a thing as a Web2.0 ‘design ethic’?

It would certainly appear so…

A fascinating article has found its way into my headlights and shows how a certain design ethic is currently ‘doing the rounds’.

Seeing as how web design trends last only 12-18 months before they begin to look ‘old’ and ‘jaded’, the article — Analysis of Web 2.0 Design & Layout Trends – Part 1: Clean, Colorful and Horizontally Divided — is certainly worth viewing.

Not only for the delicious colours and graphics used as examples, but also for the design logic behind their use.

For example, regarding navigation:

A big theme of this trend is simple, effective and clean. In order to achieve the clean feel, simple navigation is a key. In the sites we have looked at, there is a maximum of seven menu items present on the home page. Some even have as little as three menu items (Home, Login, Sign up).

A fabulous article — and one that makes me think it’s time I redesigned my two main properties, LeeHopkins.com and LeeHopkins.net. Any student designer interested in the project?
