Plaxo starting to replace Facebook as tool of choice

plaxo is replacing facebook for me, says Lee Hopkins

I don’t know about you, but I’m starting to hang out more and more on Plaxo than I am on Facebook.

Sure, the ‘notes’ section in FB are dead handy — seeing what others have posted and commented, but Plaxo has the same offering.

What is really ‘selling’ me about Plaxo, though, is that it seems to be what LinkedIn wanted to be — a place for business people to share ideas, reviews, etc., without being asked to sink one’s teeth into the necks of young virgins, accept gifts that grow, buy someone a love puppy, rate someone’s aroma or dating potential, or something equally inane.

Plaxo have a nice desktop notifier, as well as some tools that sync your Outlook data with your profile (handy if your Outlook files or Windows itself decides to play ‘funny buggers’). You can also sync to a windows mobile device.

If you are confused by the plethora of websites with funny names that appear every day and you are repeatedly requested by email to join, might I suggest that Plaxo is one that you should consider — you might even come to consider it as ‘Facebook for grown-ups’.

If only they had a simple-to-remember link to your profile like LinkedIn does… Still, you can always use this one: http://snipurl.com/2gngk  [pulse_plaxo_com]

Now, if only Microsoft would fix the sync ability with my sidekick/hiptop3, I’d be happy!

OK Lee! It might work for you. But I’m gobsmacked!. I joined Palxo about a year ago and left after 3 months. My experience has been nearly entirely negative. The only possibel cool thing about Plaxo is the adres book. Pulse sucks IMHO. I have this spam vibe with Plaxo so I have my contacts somewhere else. And Lee I haven’t even mentioed Comcast! How uncool are they!

Have you tried twitter or friendfeed… it is entirely different social networking experience to facebook or plaxo. it could take a wee bit of getting used to but I think it’s awesome. Maybe you should try it some time. look me up, http://twitter.com/dccrowley or http://friendfeed.com/dccrowley

Everyone is different but these work so well for me

Lee, interesting that you’re spending more time here. I don’t really much enjoy the experience, but essentially use Plaxo for online address book backup. That need too is disappearing as Spanning Sync allows me two-way sync between iCal/GCal and Address Book/Gmail contacts.

I have a subscription presently, but doubt I’ll renew.

You *can* get a unique URL, it’s hidden in your settings somewhere.

    G’day all,

    Thanks heaps for your comments.

Firstly, yes, my plaxo account is one of the free ones and I have no problem with it.

Secondly, I know not of the Comcast thing you talk about, Pat & DC: please enlighten me! :-)

I *have* tried Twitter and FriendFeed, DC, and am a regular twitterer and not so frequent visitor to FF that I should be :-)

I’m a product manager at Plaxo. Thanks for the writeup! Yes, we do like thinking of ourselves as a social network for grownups. Just wanted to let you know you CAN create an easy to remember URL for your profile. Just go to your profile and click on Public Profile Settings. Your URL will be in the form:

    .myplaxo.com

    My profile is hongkwon.myplaxo.com.

    Thanks for using Plaxo!

I don't care for any social network site that doesn't restrict to .edu accounts. Sorry, but allowing anything LESS, is an invitation for spam and bots.
