I had been looking for a tool that allowed me to sync my data across several computers and my notebook, when DMailer‘s Sync program came across my radar, looking like an absolute winner. But…
Here’s how Dmailer Sync is supposed to work:
Overview
You travel frequently and/or depend on a borrowed PC during your daily routine ?
Dmailer Sync meets your data mobility needs.
Once Dmailer Sync is loaded on your mobile device (USB key, external hard disk drive, SIM card, mp3 player…), you can save and carry all your data very easily.
You can access and work on all your valuable personal files and email on any PC wherever you go, without leaving any trace behind: Just plug in your mobile device and launch Dmailer Sync..
Data between your PC and your storage device will always be kept up to date and secure.Main features
• Dmailer’s unique and patented sync engine allows you to have the same version of files and/ or email both on the device and on your home or office PC at all times
• Complete email client to manage, send and receive email without any configuration required
• AES 128-bit encryption to protect your data privacy
• No installation required: the program runs from the key, so you leave no trace behind and needs no administration right to launch it on the hosting PC
• Available 11 languages (English, French, Spanish, German, , Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese, simplified and traditional Chinese).
Well, that’s the theory.
But when I tried getting it to work on my Windows Vista Home Ultimate notebook she refused to, crashing out every time. Grrr…
Fortunately I had my backup 500gb drive with me, but I had shelled out US$50 for both the Sync and the Backup program, so I am miffed that one of the most potentially useful tools in my armoury doesn’t do ‘what it says on the can’.
So despite it taking up 21gb on my portable drive (the one that should be secure, allows me to have the same version on both my main pc and my notebook, etc.,) it was to all intents and purposes completely useless for me in Melbourne.
Frustrated??? Moi???
But guess what? When I get back home and connect it back to my office desktop, it works fine. Even updates itself to a newer version. Grrr…
Even more frustrating, I connect it to my notebook which is happily connected to the office internet connection and Voila! – it works like a charm.
Double Grrr…!
I’m taking it to another place this afternoon and will see if it works again without internet connection (I had no internet connection in Melbourne on the several occasions I attempted to get Sync to work), or whether it was the upgrade that suddenly allowed it work. Stay tuned.
