I have to say I find Jaffe's points pretty obvious. Not much new there.

Oh, and I know there's the iLiad book reader in Oz, courtesy of Dymocks. I've played with one (Dymocks are a client of mine). But I just can't come at paying $900 for a device that admittedly DOES meet all of my requirements (except for the outrageous price).

If any PR company wants to send me one for review with no return...

A bit more research and it looks like the only real alternative in Oz in the cybook. I've played with one, but like Yusuf, I have real issues paying $500 for something that only comes in black and white and could be wiped out of existence by a spilt coffee or sudden rain.

Annoyingly, the cybook doesn't offer the ability to annotate; even a stylus that offered hand-written annotations in the margins would help. At least the Kindle has that.

But I do like the idea of not being tied to Amazon, which Kindle forces you to be.

But Mrs BetterComms, in her grounded, practical way, would argue, "What is the point in spending $500 on a gadget when a paperback costs around one twentieth of the price? If 'they' want us to go green to save the planet then 'they' can supply you one for free."

And I have to agree with her; whilst the greeny credentials of ebook readers are wonderful (no more chopped trees), the cost of being an early adopter is too high until some cheaper distribution method (like we have with mobile phone plans and free phones) becomes available to the masses.
