SocMed in Adelaide: an invitation

Lee Hopkins and others interested in socmed in Adelaide prepares for a meeting of minds as it readies itself for its next towards global domination of communication processes Further to my earlier post and a great interaction amongst many of the Adelaide SocMed/SocNet community, it looks like Wednesday next week (2nd December*) is the ‘best fit’ for the majority.

Naturally, this is not the best fit for everyone; I apologise that some will have to miss out or will have to rearrange their schedules if they are to attend, but there is little I can do about that.

So, the invite is out there: anyone and everyone who has any interest in SocMed/SocNet in Adelaide – stroke – South Australia and wishes to see if there is or isn’t any value in co-ordinating our resources is welcome to attend.

Not being able to predict how many will turn up, I suggest we meet somewhere in the open first, in order to gauge numbers; we then, depending on numbers, either head to a hotel bar or to a cafe so that everyone can have an equal chance of being heard and hearing what is being said.

Does anyone have any suggestions for suitable venues for

  1. the open-air gathering place?
  2. the actual discussion place?

Comments/suggestions either here or on Twitter – hashtag #SMCADL (because whether or not we decide to affiliate with the Social Media Club there is little benefit to be gained by frickin’ around with hashtags this early in the game just to set up a bloomin’ meeting).

* 2nd is also the day after my birthday, so you can STILL all buy me drinks! [big grin]

How about back at the Tivoli (like #CommsAdelaide)? or one of the larger cafes on Rundle Street? There should be plenty of room whether 5 or 20 people turn up…

Oh no! I would have to miss out on this, as I'd be travelling overseas for about 6 weeks. Bummer. Hopefully, I'll get to catch up when I get back. Thanks for organising this, though. I can't wait to find out what happens!

Sounds good to me. We had the first couple of BarCamp meetings at the Lion in North Adelaide, because their outside area was pretty nice. :) The weather this last month has been qute unpredictable so hmmm ;)

the last few internet marketing related meetings i've been to were hosted at higher ground, it seems like a pretty good venue and there is also a wireless lan nearby for those who have laptops / iphones :)

I reckon I'll be able to attend. Looking forward to mixing with a different crowd.

As others have said, it will be interesting to mingle with a different crowd. So I'll be there on Wednesday night. Let's see where this takes us in our journey!

I'm sorry I can't make it tonight, it is waaay too far for me to walk from my office :/

I would like to give my input though on the whole thing, I think by turning the Comms Adelaide into SMC Adl might be a good idea, but the umbrella suggestion of events and any membership fees will almost definitely turn people away.

This is just from my experience running ATUB (Twitter Meets monthly), Cupcake And BarCamp over the last 12 months. People tend to get a bit touchy about it. :P

SMCADL is definitely a great idea for the keen CommsAdelaide folk who are really interested in Social Media and communications in Adelaide but as for getting the average person who is slightly interested it's much more of a stretch. :)

Let me know what you all discuss this evening and I'd love to give my feedback too :) Maybe I could catch up with a small group of you somewhere central after Christmas for a chat :)

    Aah! Still thinking here..

I think putting our contacts together and helping each other out with particular things is a good idea – I got some help from @PPRAdelaide and @LeapWords with Cupcake Camp which I was very thankful for..

We all know the right people to get everything done, so why not just start up an online hub with a forum and a blog that everyone can post on and get help from everyone else? Everyone knows someone they might be able to get some help from, so I am willing to help out with that, we have something similar in place for Adelaide Tweeters (http://www.adelaidetweeters.com) that I'd love to give a kick up the backside and get some posters too!

Aaaaanyway I'll stop talking now, take my feedback tonight and hopefully I'll see you guys next time. :) There's a BarCamp online discussion next week if anyone is interested too :)
