5 teenage girls and the GOBS 2012 furore

Five teenage girls from an Adelaide all-girls high school have done themselves a tremendous amount of ill-fortune by filming themselves offering sexual acts.

In an obvious spoof of the phenomenal KONY 2012 video the allegedly 14 year old girls created a GOBS 2012 video. I bet they didn’t expect, nor understand, why they suddenly got so much attention from their peers, the media and the police.

I was interviewed by Channel Seven’s Today Tonight program about their disastrous foray into social media. The video is from the Sydney program; the Adelaide version had me interviewed by the Adelaide host, Rosanna Mangiarelli (who is lovely and, it turns out, is an old Ignatian like me, and completed her degree at the same School of Communication where I’m currently completing my Doctorate).

If the Adelaide version of the interview appears I’ll pop it up here. In the meantime, here’s the Sydney version:

Why does Dr. Carr-Greg, speak on this entertainment show, today tonight is not news. Blame the culture not the individuals in this circumstance, also blame the parents, for not teaching these children to respect themselves, and their bodies.

Wow, honestly, just wow. Do you people have NO idea that the whole video was a JOKE? Calm your farm for christ’s sake. They’re not prostitutes, they’re SCHOOL GIRLS. Stop taking it so far, you’re only making it worse for them, do you now know how the internet works?

The only reason that they may have “ruined” their reputations, was because of media’s reaction to them. Or to be more precise the reaction of the real internet idiots (mostly old people).

THEY WERE SUSPENDED FROM THEIR EDUCATION; for a joke that hurts no one. Taking it offline is fine. Abusing the kids and calling them “stupid” is idiotic. And those kids won’t listen to them at all. Because if they have their head screwed on right they’ll see that everyone else is over-reacting.
